Chinaremainsoneofthesafestcountriesintheworld,asithaslongbeenamongnationswiththelowestcrimerates,andtherateofseriousviolentoffensesinthecountryhasbeenonacontinuousdeclineinrecentdecades,accordingtoareport.

Inthepast20years,crimesofintentionalhomicide,robberyandabductionhavebeenconstantlydroppingacrossthecountry.Thenumberofpeopleaccusedofsuchcrimesdecreasedby67.7percentlastyearcomparedwith2003,accordingtothereportissuedrecentlybytheChineseAcademyofSocialSciences"InstituteofLaw.

Itrevealedthatthenumberofdefendantsconvictedofseriousviolentcrimesdecreasedto56,800in2021from95,700in2013.

Inaddition,offensesinvolvingfirearmsweredown21percentyear-on-yearin2022,whilethoseinvolvingexplosivesdeclined19percent,thereportsaid.

"ThesefigureshaveshownthatsuchcrimesinChinaremainlow,indicatingthatChinesepeople"ssenseofsecurityisatahighlevel,"saidZhangZhigang,anassociateresearchfellowattheinstitutewhoheadstheteamthatcompiledthereport.

Thecountryhasalsoincreasedlegalprotectionforwomenandchildren,Zhangsaid.

InMarchlastyear,theMinistryofPublicSecurity,theMinistryofCivilAffairs,theNationalHealthCommissionandtheAll-ChinaWomen"sFederationjointlylaunchedacampaigntofightthecrimeofabductingandtraffickingwomenandchildren.

BySeptember,morethan900suchcasesweresolvedandover1,340suspectscaptured,accordingtothereport.

Itciteddatashowingthat717peoplewerechargedwiththecrimefromJanuarytoSeptemberlastyear,with234othersaccusedofbuyingtheabductedwomenandchildren.

Togivestrongersupportforwomeninmorefields,theStandingCommitteeoftheNationalPeople"sCongress,China"stoplegislature,adoptedinOctoberanamendmenttotheLawontheProtectionofRightsandInterestsofWomen,thereportsaid.Furthermore,judicialagencieshaveprioritizedacrackdownonthesexualassaultofchildren.

Inaddition,thereporthailedthecountry"sgreatereffortsinrecentyearsinfightingtelecommunicationsandonlinefraudaswellascorruption.Thefightagainstrelatedcrimeswillbefurtherstrengthenedinthenexttwoorthreeyears,accordingtothereport.

Morecasesconcerningmoneylaunderingwillbehandled,asfugitivecaptureandassetrecoveryworkintensifies,thereportsaid.

Moreover,itsaidthatjudicialactionagainstcrimessuchasspyingandtheftofStatesecretswillbeenhancedtobetterguaranteenationalsecurity,followingarevisiontotheCounter-EspionageLaw,whichwasadoptedinAprilbytheNPCStandingCommitteeandwilltakeeffectonJuly1.
